The Last Water

One village. Three choices. No easy answer.

The Last Water: a stone reservoir and iron key in a village at dusk

The first river disappeared in the spring. By midsummer, even the wells remembered water more generously than they gave it.

For twenty years the village had lived by one rule: every household received the same measured share from the stone reservoir. Children carried their clay jars at dawn. The old waited in the shade. No one received more because of a name, a title, or a favor.

The chief had helped write that rule. His mother had insisted upon it.

“A law that bends only for the powerful,” she once told him, “is not a law worth teaching our children.”

Then the drought reached her.

At dusk, the village healer came to their house. The chief's mother lay beside an untouched cup. Her lips were cracked; her fever had risen. “She needs more water tonight,” the healer said quietly. “I cannot promise she will endure until morning.”

The family had already used its daily portion. The next distribution would begin at sunrise.

The chief walked outside carrying a small iron key. It opened the village reservoir. Behind that door there was still water—water reserved so every family might survive the weeks ahead.

He thought of his mother's voice. He thought of the neighbors who would never know if he took one extra jar. Then he thought of a child he had seen coughing beside the queue that morning. Her family had obeyed the law, too.

The chief went to the village square. A few lamps still burned. He could summon the council and ask for an exception. By the time they gathered, another hour might be lost. Or he could send people beyond the hills to search for the old spring, though no one knew whether it still flowed.

One choice might save his mother and break the trust of a village. Another might preserve public trust at a terrible private cost. A third might place a human life in the hands of a slow public decision.

His mother had taught him that rules must protect the vulnerable. Tonight, he could no longer tell whether obeying the rule would honor her lesson—or betray it.

From the dark house came the sound of someone calling his name.

He closed his hand around the key.

What would you do?

Choose the chief's next action. You will enter an authored continuation of the story. You can always return to the moment of choice and explore the other paths.

A note to the reader: This is original fiction. The choices are not tests of character and there are no points to win. Your selection is not recorded, stored, or shared.
